Texas is one of the few states that is managing to avoid the worst of the Great Recession. With no state income taxes, a booming oil industry, and less business regulation, Americans migrated to Texas by the millions, earning the Lone Star state four extra seats in the House of Representatives. And now, they're taking it to Uncle Sam by rejecting a federal rule that requires the adoption of energy-efficient lamps. Will their "intrastate defense" work?

I think that the whole issue is kind of dumb. If the light bulbs are really as good as the government claims they are, why would they force idiots(the states that don't want to co-operate) to buy these amazing light bulbs. Let people buy what they want to buy, especially when it comes down to something as simple as light bulbs. I think that the government sees it as a slap in the face that a state is rebelling against a law like this so they just want to force it upon the states even harder. Kind of like when a child asks why & their parent tells them because they said so (even though it's only to show you who has the power). On the other-hand, Texas, might as well just buy the light bulbs since it will "save" them their 85 dollars per household per year AND it's good for the environment(sounds too good to be true, what does the government get out of this?). It's never this serious though, to each man his own. Let people spend their money how they want it.

I believe that the state should not be trying to force the law. If the light bulb were good let the people find out for them selfs. The issue is kind of just a waste of time, not only are they still buying lightbulb but there not gaining money from it because its lower costs on bills. The people should be able to buy what they want, and if they had a low tax income, a booming oil industry and less business regulation just make it more expensive to live there.
ReplyDeleteRiley Stein p.4
The light bulbs are only being changed to help the people with the cost of electricity and help the environment. Both the people and the government win if the law is passed. If the people think it is taking there rights away then that's just them being ignorant and selfish. The switch of lightbulb saves $85 a year which is helping them, while lowering the need of electricity. I think the law is logical since it is only a lightbulb that is being enforced and it is not that difficult to buy a lightbulb from a local store.

Why is this even a debate? The whole thing is just kind of time wasting. So what if you can't buy the light bulb you want? People will get over it eventually. It's just a light bulb! If they break what do you do, well...... for me i just throw the broken thing away in the trash without a care in the world. If we were to get these damn florescent lights they are a danger. Here are the directions if a CFL or florescent light were to break inside your house (just to let you know its 3 pages long and this is from the EPA dated January 25,2011.)
"U.S. Environmental Protection Agency January 25, 2011
1 of 3
What to Do if a Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) Bulb or
Fluorescent Tube Light Bulb Breaks in Your Home1
Fluorescent light bulbs contain a small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing. When a fluorescent
bulb breaks in your home, some of this mercury is released as mercury vapor. The broken bulb can continue to
release mercury vapor until it is cleaned up and removed from the residence.
To minimize exposure to mercury vapor, EPA recommends that residents follow the cleanup and disposal steps
described below. This cleanup guidance represents the minimum actions recommended to clean up a broken
CFL, and will be updated as EPA identifies more effective cleanup practices.
Before Cleanup
• Have people and pets leave the room, and avoid the breakage area on the way out.
• Open a window or door to the outdoors and leave the room for 5‐10 minutes.
• Shut off the central forced‐air heating/air conditioning (H&AC) system, if you have one.
• Collect materials you will need to clean up the broken bulb:
o Stiff paper or cardboard
o Sticky tape (e.g., duct tape)
o Damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes (for hard surfaces)
o Glass jar with a metal lid (such as a canning jar) or a sealable plastic bag(s)
CLEANUP AND DISPOSAL OVERVIEW
The most important steps to reduce exposure to mercury vapor from a broken bulb are:
1. Before cleanup
a. Have people and pets leave the room.
b. Air out the room for 5‐10 minutes by opening a window or door to the outdoor
environment.
c. Shut off the central forced air heating/air conditioning system, if you have one.
d. Collect materials needed to clean up broken bulb.
2. During cleanup
a. Be thorough in collecting broken glass and visible powder.
b. Place cleanup materials in a sealable container.
3. After cleanup
a. Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials outdoors in a trash container or
protected area until materials can be disposed of properly. Avoid leaving any bulb
fragments or cleanup materials indoors.
b. If practical, continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the
heating/air conditioning system shut off for several hours.

I support this statement because Texas may be under the impression that they are being told how to live their lives, but they need to realize the changing of light bulbs is a benefit toward the world. I personally believe that this law should be passed and the banning of incandescent light bulbs should be indefinite. Erin, I don't understand how you could say that you "honestly don't see what the big deal is about switching over to the more efficient light bulb" when in fact a major problem in our country now is the level of energy that we consume annually. I don't know whether or not you have noticed, but it's not a good thing. Taking AP environmental science has showed me that switching to fluorescent bulbs rather than the incandescent can substantially decrease the level of energy consumption that this country constantly faces. Even though Texas declares that these laws "do not involve interstate commerce and therefore are not subject to federal regulation", it is just like trying to legalize marijuana in some states; the government has the right to prohibit the growing or use of it. This example just shows us that even though Texas has the right to keep buying and using the inefficient incandescent light bulbs, the government also has the right to prohibit the selling or use of them. Andrew, just because you are saying that we are a "free country", does that mean we are free to go out and commit misdemeanors or even worse? We may be called a free country, but that doesn't mean that there aren't any restrictions on how the inhabitants of it must act. I think that your point is invalid, maybe you should reconsider your argument. Overall, I think that in order to be conservative of our nation's energy, you shouldn't argue over little things. Just let the law pass; it's just showing that Texans cannot pay for a more energy efficient bulb. Like the article stated, it saves each household on average $85 a year. I am pretty sure every household can fork over an extra dollar or two. It's not that hard people, be conservative. Don't mess up this country more than it already is.

Although Texas is one of the better off states during this rough patch in America's history, a change in the lighting in the United States should be the least of our worries. It may seem that using incandescent lights will benefit them greatly, but in the end, the total cost of electricity will be the same. A recent blogger from the article stated the following, "The mercury content of a CFL bulb is 1 to 5 mg. There is more than 1000 times that amount in the thermostat on your wall, if you still have an older model. Newer CFL's have a system to encapsulate the mercury in the event of breakage AND, get this. The biggest contributor to mercury in our lives/environment is burning coal to make electricity. If we all used CFL's rather than incandescent bulbs, we'd have much less mercury in our eco system. I don't know how much less, but a lot less because we'd be burning 70% less coal to generate electricity for lighting." This proves that using any other lighting will be the same, if not worse for our nation. Even if it did help with the cost of electricity - which it doesn't - the amount of mercury in our ecosystem will increase! All in all, we will either have to continue following our current federal rule that requires the adoption of energy-efficient lamps, or have an ecosystem full of mercury. Unlike Texas, I'd rather stick with electricity bills.

This whole argument is stupid. If it's more energy efficient to use the other lightbulbs, why is Texas making such a big deal about it? I don't think they should exactly be forcing it on people. That is definitely not an "enumerated power" as you would say. But it's ridiculous to even argue when the government always wins.

I believe that the Texas' complete argument does not hold any ground because this bill is meant to save the states' and country's money. If they rather waste money spending it on light bulbs that waste energy that is their problem and they should leave it that way, not go around making such a big deal out of it and pretending that it's important.

The government is doing the most, they need to calm down. They have many rights as it is, but this is ridiculous. Let people buy what they want to buy, especially when it comes down to something as simple as light bulb. I think that this argument is a waste of time! Texas needs to stop worrying about the light bulbs, when they have many other important issues they should be worrying about. Yes , it helps save energy, but i personally believe it should be a choice left up to the buyer. And its preserve future energy, is a good thing . Its not like its a bad thing, but still it shouldn't matter.

I believe that Texas' argument is a waste of time. Indeed, some things should be left for the States, but nonetheless, the National Gov. is moving to help our economy, and our Earth, by passing a law to sell flourescent light bulbs. Texas feels that it has more power just because it has more representatives in the House of Reps., but they shouldn't be moving to use that power for something useless. They're too focused on trying to limit the power of the National Gov. that they can't see the whole picture of the flourescent light bulbs.
ReplyDeleteTexas should instead be focusing the power they have on more pressing matters, rather than fighting over what type of bulb your lamp will be using.

I think this argument is pointless honestly. I undertsand what the people are trying to say as far as them not wanting the government to be controlling their lives but if it is going to make lighting more efficnt and decrease the peoples light bill then i dont see what the problem is. Honestly there are more improtant things they can be arguing over then ligh bulbs. Texas needs to stop worrying about this and focus on bigger matters because weather or not you use a flourencent buld or an incandescent in just unecessary.

I feel like the entire thing is stupid. Its just a light bulb. Texas shouldn't make such a big deal of it but neither should the nation. Personally if my room is lit up, i don't care what the light bulb looks like or anything. I just really think that them banning the old school light bulbs is pretty pointless & a waste of time. But props to texas for standing up for themselves ;)

Period 4 weeeest,
My view on this is that Texas should be able to say weather or not they need to use the bulbs or not. They should look into it but they don't have to if they don't want to. Why do we have to use those bulbs anyway? We are paying a dollar extra for a bulb that does not even have as good as light as the last bulb and a bulb that is not good to inhale. I think they should just band those bulbs. I mean yea it does save money and electricity but is the money that really matters. I done think it does in this situation it's the safety of the people that matters. What if you have a kid playing with those bulbs and it brakes, your kid is no inhaling that gas. So I say they should not have these bulbs period
ReplyDeleteTexas should have the right to sell any kind of light bulbs they want! The federal gov`t shouldn`t force a state to sell a certain type of light bulbs! (rest is above)

I can appreciate where the national government is coming from, wanting to save more energy, but at the same time I think this just stems back to the Federal vs. State controversy. Personally, it doesn't bother me that there will no longer be the original light bulb; but who am I to expect someone else to give theirs up? As long as states such as Texas, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania continue to pay their higher electirc bills, it shouldn't matter whether or not their using the inefficient bulbs.

I believe that the national government is only trying to improve the world and in the long run save money for the United States. i dont not know why Texas is against this because its a win win situation. you save money and energy. while the world is being less polluted. i am with this new law.

I agree with most of the posts here that are saying Texas should be able to choose which light bulb they'd want to use. I understand that the main reason of this occurrence is because the government would like to help with the environment and provide better resources to Texas. So there is a good and a bad side. In my opinion however, it is not much of a good thing that the government is doing. I mean they are the national government and should let people of Texas decide on what they'd like to do even though the incandescent light bulb will probably benefit them better.

i believe that Texas should make their own light bulbs because the state should chose rather or not to sell a certain light bulb or not.

I believe that Texas has the right to make their own light bulbs, and if it makes them happy then just let it be. Also they could just man up and use and sell these new energy saving light bulbs. This argument is pretty pointless in both areas of the conflict, but I truthfully am on Texas side about keeping light bulbs.
ReplyDeleteCharles Mabrie
I think Texas can save the incandescent bulb , but the states have to obey the government rules ans laws. But also government have to listen to the states and to the people , and try to do what they want.
