President Obama is the latest in a long line of presidents to routinely commit American forces to action without a Congressional declaration of war. This tension between the President's power as commander-in-chief and Congress' power to declare war is perhaps one of the most contentious constitutional issues today. But one UCLA professor thinks that Obama is well within his constitutional powers to use military force in Libya.
Warring ambitions
Knowing that Obama is the Commander in Chief over the military combat, he has the final say. This is what the people wanted, a strong enforcement over the military to lead them through. "Ambition must be made to counteract ambition."

I know that Obama is the commander and chief of war, so i dont think that he should have to go to the senate to declare war. Since he is the commander is chief, he should have the final say with anything about war. I don't think they should have this act, giving limits to the presidents power of war. The president should take action when he feels the need to do so, not on the senates terms.

The president is the commander and cheif of the american armed forces, so he is able to make undeclared war. the little battles that presidents send troops to fight gives the soldiers actual training and new ways to better their tactics. the americans wated the president to be the commander in cheif for a reason, so he has all the say he wants to make undeclared war. but, i dont think that the president should use the armed forces to his personal advantage, that is not why our military is here, their here to protect the amrican people, and in cases of making undeclared war, our countries interests... not the presidents, or big corporations interests.

Obama is the commander in chief, so he should have every right to make his own decisions, even if it includes declaring war. He is like the main person so why should anyone be able to over rule him. I think the president should't have a certain point where he can decide things. America gave him trust so he could make decisions like this with no questions asked.

Obama is the commander and chief of the armed forces and he has the power to make undeclared war. In some situations i dont think congress should have the power to declare war, obama should have the final war making decision. Most people believe in the presidents decision and he should be able to take action when he needs to, not congress. Plus if we're under attack at night and we need to take action immediately why should the president have to wait for congresses approval. So i think the president should be able to make war making decisions, but i do think that congress should have a little say in the decision.

Having President Obama being commander in chief is a good idea. Personally being the commander in chief they should always have a final saying to whether to declare war or get out of war. As well i think it is a good idea for congress to come and either agree with with the commander in chief or disagree because you never want the president to always make the choices all the time because then this country is almost dictated by one person. Congress is put there to make sure the President doesn't abuse this power.

I think that Obama as commander in chief should be able to make the final decision on war but only with the help of Congress. I also believe that if majority of Congress consider going to war a bad idea/disagree, then they should have a say and try convincing the president to not declare war. I believe that even the president could make bad calls and that our country should not suffer because of a regretful decision made only by the president.

I understand that Congress should be the only one declaring war but I think there are times in which the president being the commander of the military should be able to act fast and be ableto declare war especially in an emergency. I also think it is hard for the president to hold on to declaring war even if they have the title as commander.

I believe the President should be able to send the troops into action when he finds it necessary, but it would not be smart to give one person all the power which is why the framers gave Congress the power to declare war in the Constitutions. This country is based on the idea of separation of power, so i believe if it is not an imminent threat the president should check with congress which would better reflect the views of the people.

The president of the United states is the commander in chief for a reason.Although our president is commander in chief I think it is smart that we have congress choose if we go to war or not but I think that it could be really dumb as well. We can be under attack and have to wait for congress to make a call to go to war. But if the president is declaring war for no reason than that's when congress should come in and not have our troops go to war. In the end I think it's great that we have our system the way we do because we have been running our country like this for so many years so why try to change it now?

if the president of the united states of america is the commander and chief of the armed forces why isnt he allowed to have a say so in declaring war. I understand that they dont want to give too much power to the president but like my fellow classmates said the president should have the power to declare war in certain occasions especially because it takes longer for congress to decide and if it is an urgent occasion i think the president should at least be able to but in. After all he is the commander and chief

I agree with the UCLA professor, the president dose have that power but I think it should be changed. I think it is a little scary for one man to have so much power and it should be restricted to where he can only use that power as an act of defense if there is an attack on our own nation, then he should be allowed to respond right away, but if we were to say go on the attack or even defend another ally the congress should be involved in that decision.

i like the fact that the president cannot declare war. i like this process except in a emergency because if it wasnt this way then it may take too long for congress to make the decision and also he may become a dictator and just attack countries to gain more and more power.

saying the president has to wait on congress to declare war is like saying a woman in labor has to wait a few days to give birth. i think that the president should be able to declare war without the approval of congress but congress should be able to review his actions and later on determine if going to war was the right thing to do or not. i mean presidents in the past have started wars without the approval of congress already so why start now when they're already doing it without congress's approval.
ReplyDelete- Jaime Martinez P.5
in my opinion, i am okay with the president to declare war to some extent. as we have seen in the past, certain situations call fro immediate action and waiting on congress to approve may be too late. As President of the United States and commander in chief, they should have the final say. but i also believe that Congress should have some say because the President may not be acting upon reason and may not fully understand the consequences and aftermath of declaring war.

I feel the president should not have to wait for orders by Congress just to declare war. He is the commander in chief and if he should not have to wait overnight if something were to happen to strike back because it could be too late. Congress should have a big part in it but not the whole say. The past presidents have all had the power to declare war i feel for Obama it should not be any different.
ReplyDelete-Nathan Short
Presidemt Obama is the commander of chief of our armed forces , so therefore he has the power not to wait for Congress to declare war. In some cases such as if we wanted to attack or invade another nation. Most American would agree that over the years many president have declare without Congrees's approval and it worked out just fine so it should be any different Obama or any future presidents.

I don't believe that the president should have the final say in whether or not the country can declare war. war is a huge deal and the decision to go to war should be made after much consideration of many different people, not just one. I believe that what the war powers act has proposed is the highest amount of power the president should have in this situation. there are cases where troops need to be sent immediately but if after 60 days congress has not decided to declare war they need to be removed. yes, he is the commander in chief, but he is also the president who needs to realize that an immediate declaration of war based on the opinions of one person can be disastrous for country.

obama is commander and chief he should not have to go to the senate to declare war as president of the united states we people elected him and if he does decide to go to war it must be for the right reason and if not we the people voted for him therefore its our fault. i dont think tat congress should tell the president how to manage his troops and how long they can go to war for either that should be up the president only.

The president is the commander in chief but he should still go to congress to declare war. The only way I think he should go to war without going to congress is if there is a attack the us. Other than that he needs to go to congress because if he goes to a unneeded war then we have troops out there for no reason. So yes in my opinion the president needs to go to congress to go to war.

I think that since Obama is the commander and chief he shouldn't have to go to the Senate about going to war. We the ppl elected him and this is what alot of us wanted so if the ppl have a problem then its their fault for electing him. Congess needs to suck it up and get over it because they barely like to make decisions for us now so why complain about it .

Since obama is president adn he is the commander and chief then he can do whatever he wants but he shouldnt send out our troops with out undeclared war. Congress should step up and hold obama on a leach well kind. if delcared war is needed for important issues then i am okay with what obama has to do.
